" Game night"
by Jan van Gorkum
Okay, who else thinks about " Funny games" from 1997 by Michael Haneke? ;D
Hope, its not gonna be so disturbing like it, though! It is Dutch. Lovely.
To be subjective for a while. The Dutchies hold a special place in my heart. Exciting!
First impression. It is not going to be SUCH a game night. Boyfriend introduces
girlfriend to his parents. As it goes. Right? Not that I've been in such a situation.
Okay… So we have a fanatical mother and fanatical girlfriend.
Argument over a board game? Short relationship that will be, ladies and gentleman.
It follows a cliché montage of a classic board game night. Winning girlfriend,
upset mother, worried boyfriend. What will come next? Okay. That was kinda funny.
Montage ends, like the rock music with it. Should I believe, that they switched
from classic to rock, or is it the classic that stopped playing?
I guess we will never know! I am going to believe neither, but appreciate
the effort of a comedy aspect. Middle of the film. We have drama,
ladies and gentleman. The dad tries to easy the situation and, when explains,
that his wife is A PAIN when drinks, she OF COURSE takes a sip from
her wine glass. Ahhh. This wasn’t needed. It gets a bit weird. Okayokayokay.
I take it back. It has something from the film. The mom doesn’t let the girl go home,
explaining that the game isn't yet over. She can’t loose her spirit that fast, right?
It is kind of funny, that we have a turn of the situation. Now even the boyfriend
insists for her to stay. But, it is a touch theatrical. IT IS a turn again!
Now they reveal that it was all a set up, a test to see if she's a good fit for the family.
She passed, but she isn’t happy and leaves. Well, I don't blame her.
Such a brainwashing environment. AND A ANOTHER TURN. I comes out,
that he wanted to break up with her in a creative way. By putting her and us
on a emotional roller coaster with three spicy turns. And as a roller coaster,
we want to believe, that he is going to do it again that way. It's more fun, right?
I have to add. It is very Amsterdam Filmschool like. Although, that is only my observation.
It's a safe shorty. The shots are well selected to tell the story. Nothing crazy. A well, done performance.
I wonder, how the story would develop if the girl would have turned the situation upside down? ;)
What do you think?
Material for a feature? Nah, not really. Haneke took care of it 20 years ago.
